Pont des Arts, Avril 2011/Pont des Arts, April 2011

Picture
76cm x 38cm/30"x15"

Painted one afternoon on the pedestrian-only Pont des Arts in Paris in April 2011 to the enjoyment of many curious passers-by, this Abstract-Expressionist painting has flowers the size of palm trees and several suns reflecting in this east-looking viewpoint of the River Seine (toward the westernmost tip of Île de la Cité). The top section, a gray-green sky with misty, drained clouds, the kind one sees after a good rain, serves as a sort of juxtaposition for the more sunny foreground.

The Crab's Muse/La Muse du Crabe

Picture
6'x4'/1,8m x 1,2m

This large abstract is various Madonna remixes and what emerged is an imaginative underwater scene that glows in the dark. A large crab reaches up with its right claw toward its muse, represented by two eyes with blonde eyelashes in the upper left. Sea anenomies and seagrass, and sea horses abound.

An Unexamined Life is Not Worth Living

Picture
6'x4'/1,8m x 1,2m

This commission represents six abstract versions of Madonna, including the Picasso-esque jockey in the black section. Mirrors in various shapes such as exclamation points and horses are attached to the canvas in this mixed-media piece.

Moonshine/Clair de Lune   (The moon glows in the dark)

Picture
3'x3'/91cm x 91cm

This painting, which represents the spinning moon seen through a window, is owned by a Scottsdale resident and is the very first in his collection.

The Dream Beyond the Wall

Picture

30"x24"/76cm x 60cm

Another more simple piece, this painting is both a desert scene (textured dark sand dune at bottom) and a room with a blue wall blending into a purple night sky with stars and a crescent moon, and a small window to that same night sky.

Sky Meets Ocean: The West Coast

Picture
53"x33"/134cm x 83cm

King Tut

Picture
Triptych (12"x48"/30cm x 120cm each), Acrylic on Canvas and Mixed Media-beach glass.
This triptych was commissioned by a Seattle art lover as a present for Seattle DJ "King Tut," whose re-mixes I used to create this unique gift.

A Crowded Paris Sidewalk in Spring/Un Trottoir de Paris Bondé en Printemps

Picture
40"x30"/101cm x 76cm

Painting the soundtract to the Nicole Kidman movie  Birth (Alexandre Desplat), Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and Beat Assailant, images of a crowded Paris sidewalk emerged in four seasons and became the Expressionist-Abstract series seen here.  Spring, punctuated by red dots, is partly characterized by virgin green. This piece was purchased by a Seattle collector.

A Crowded Paris Sidewalk in Summer/Un Trottoir de Paris Bondé en Eté

Picture
30"x40"/76cm x 101cm

In addition to the red and green dots, Summer is characterized by hotter colors, a blue sky, and a blazing sun shimmering across the top.

A Crowded Paris Sidewalk in Autumn/Un Trottoir de Paris Bondé en Automne

Picture
6'x4'/1,8m x 1,2m

Autumn was acquired by a couple of Seattle art collectors who were drawn to the sublte use of bright colors.  Boulevard St. Germain is characterized by the long vertical pink section just right of center.

A Crowded Paris Sidewalk in Winter/Un Trottoir de Paris Bondé en Hiver

Picture
30"x40"/76cm x 101cm

The last in the series, Winter is depicted in cooler colors. Staying true to the element of Expressionism in this series, Boulevard St. Germain in Winter is represented by the long vertical opalescent blue-white section just right of center. This piece is accented with a pattern of snowflakes.

2010

Denver, July 1980
/Denver, Juillet 1980

Picture
4'x3'/121cm x 91cm

This painting was inspired by a July 1980 trip to Denver, where I saw mountains for the first time. The way the sun set over the Rockies made them glow red, which became an indelible image. The upper right section is the Puerta Vallarta night sky. Attached to the canvas are a 1980 quarter and penny, a 1967 quarter, and the front and back of the new state series of quarters released in the early 2000's.

36 Hours
/36 Heures

Picture
'
4'x3'/121cm x 91cm
Acrylic on Canvas/Mixed Media (beach glass collected from Alki in West Seattle)

Commissioned by a Hawaii collector who requested I paint music of Thievery Corporation, this painting can be classified as Fauvist, like 2003's 24 Hours, above.

Ten Months in Seattle/Dix Mois à Seattle

Picture
4'x4'/1,2m x 1,2m

Acrylic on Canvas and Mixed Media (sand, beach glass, and sea shells collected from Alki Beach in West Seattle)

This painting was inspired by Beyoncé's "Halo" and "If I Were a Boy," in addition to Estelle's "American Boy" and Lily Allen's "The Fear." The Olympic Mountains are represented by the jagged white lines, and a flotilla of sailboats by triangular pieces of white shells.

Sardinia/La Sardaigne

Picture
30"x15"x3"/76cm x 38cm x 7cm

In 2003 I took a photo of this village from a hotel balcony on the northwest coast of the Italian island of Sardinia and painted this Expressionist version of that photo. It was accepted for exhibition in the Salon des Artistes at the Grand Palais in Paris in November 2010.

A Western Skyline at Dusk

Picture
3'x2'/91cm x 60cm

Acrylic on Canvas and Mixed Media (beach glass collected from Alki Beach in West Seattle)

On hot summer dusks the setting sun turns downtown Seattle and Bellevue skyscrapers, topped with red-tipped antennas, hazy shades of copper, silver, and gold. The Pet Shop Boys' Discography also served as inspiration.

Lightning Strikes a Green Sea

Picture
 5'x3'/152cm x 91cm

In this Abstract, lightning is shown striking the Aegean sea (center bottom), where the light reflects smeared further toward the bottom of the canvas.  The view out onto the water is from a hillside village. On the far left, a green-skirted woman with shoulder-length black hair and wearing a low-cut, v-neck red blouse is shown up to her chin. This painting is a rendition of the images inspired by Kate Bush's 1985 Hounds of Love, music and lyrics in a class all its own.

Love is a Battlefield
/L'Amout est un Champ de Bataille

Picture
3'x2'/91cm x 61cm

Someone suggested I paint Pat Benetar's "Love is a Battlefield," so I did. A Hawaii collector purchased it as a gift.

The Apotheosis of Longing

Picture
Diptych (4'x1'/120cm x 30cm each)

'Apotheosis' is the ultimate level or perfect example of something, and this painting representing 'longing' works best as a diptych, because the canvases, while obviously paired, are separated.

2009

The World in 2009/Le Monde en 2009

Picture
3'x3'/91cm x 91cm

This 2009 commission also includes images inspired by Beyoncé, Billy Joel, and Britney Spears. In this abstract piece it appears as though two worlds inevitably collide in both acrimonious and harmonious fashion.

Candy/Le Bonbon
  (1/2) Diptych

Picture
18"x30"/45cm x 76cm

Candy
  (2/2) Diptych

The bubble gum music of Britney Spears, Beyoncé, and the Bangles helped set the stage for this pop culture diptych owned by a couple of Seattle collectors.

Picture
18"x30"/45cm x 76cm

Arabia
  (1/3) Triptych

Picture
48"x12"/121cm x 30cm

A combination of Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Billy Joel, and Ravel inspired this 2009 triptych whose name stems from the hot desert fire colors and gold accents.

Arabia
  (2/3) Triptych

Picture
48"x18"/121cm x 45cm

Arabia

(3/3) Triptych

Picture
48"x12"/121cm x 30cm

Throwing Water

Picture
2'x2'/60cm x 60cm

Beyoncé, Billy Joel, and Britney Spears' music inspired this abstract, where some see a large red lobster. This painting is owned by a Seattle resident.

4th of July Pass

Picture
4'x1'/121cm x 30cm

The first time I saw the Milky Way Galaxy was at the 4th of July Pass in the North Cascade Mountains in Washington State. This painting is titled for that place due to images and lyrics provoked by The Church's Starfish and the Police's Ghost in the Machine, both of which contain many dream-like songs. Starfish contains their most popular song, "Under the Milky Way." This painting was purchased by a Seattle collector.

The OC, 1999/La Comté de l'Orange, Californie, 1999

Picture

3'x3'/91cm x 91cm

Britney Spears' Circus is the impetus for this abstract where, juxtaposed among what could be described as Chinese characters, groups of red-hooded ghosts with blue faces and white eyes look back at the viewer.

Dorothy Before the Rainbow
/Dorothy Avant l'Arc-en-Ciel

Picture
3'x4'/91cm x 121cm

Gifted to a charity auction at the downtown Seattle's Sheraton Hotel benefiting underprivileged youth wanting to attend college, this abstract, punctuated by the artist's iconic dots, is a representation of the very upbeat, southern California music of The Bangles. Several reproductions on aluminum have been sold.

2008

The Gift
/Le Cadeau

Picture
18"x24"/45cm x 60cm

Ironically, this painting was titled three years before it was gifted to benefit a charity auction for homeless animals. The buyer immediately gifted it to a second charity auction, benefiting more animals.

Toronto, December 1989/Toronto, Décembre 1989

Picture
18"x24"/45cm x 60cm

Purchased at the Seattle gallery by a couple visiting from Sweden, this Abstract Expressionist painting of Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory represents the view from the 42nd floor of downtown Toronto's Hyatt in a December 1989 snowtorm.

2007

Paris Hilton/Game Show Contestant

Picture
3'x3'/91cm x 91cm

Britney Spears' In the Zone once again served as inspiration for this pop culture piece. As the socialite Paris Hilton, the painting displays three eyes (cover one of them to achieve a different facial expression), her thin nose, and signature pink lips (lip liner added). As Game Show Contestant (Wheel of Fortune, specifically), the lady is yelling out letters for Vanna to turn, and her teeth are stenciled letters, including the show's given 'R, S, T, L.' The large black eye on the right is textured to resemble a '45 record. The arms are textured with small beads.

Instinct/L'Instinct

Picture
3'x4'/91cm x 121cm

The Church's Starfish, with its dreamy music and free-association lyrics, proved instrumental in the production of Instinct, which turned out to be the face of a monkey whose right eye is red and who is holding a red sucker in its mouth. The large right ear and jaw are clearly outlined, while a school of fish swim in the upper right white section.

Disillusionment of the American Family

Picture
18"x18"x3"/45cm x 45cm x 7cm

Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory served as inspiration for this disillusioned American family of four (parents in the foreground), which can be classified as "Outsider Art."

October
in Paris/Octobre à Paris

Picture
5'x3'/152cm x 91cm

The best time to visit Paris is October, when the tourists are gone, the air is the crispest and cleanest of the year and when the autumn sky achieves a blue not found at any other time of the year. Among other features, one can see a blonde princess and her confidant (back turned to us), coy fish, the westernmost tip of Île St.-Louis, Notre Dame, and characters riding on the upper level of an open-deck bus. The Bangles' Different Light and Everything, Madonna's "Oh Father" and "Cherish," and U2's  "New Year's Day" are depicted here. This is an Abstract Expressionist piece.

Île St.-Louis

Picture
3'x3'/91cm x 91cm

The Best of the Eagles and The Bangles' "Hazy Shade of Winter" served as inspiration for this additional Paris piece, owned by a Seattle collector. This painting is an aerial view of Rue de Rivoli on top (going left to right), and Île St.-Louis in the middle. Pont de l'Archevêché is represented by four horizontal white dashes at the bottom.

The Tourist/La Touriste

Picture
30"x30"76cm x 76cm

You could say this Abstract Expressionist painting represents as the center blank figure a gold-crowned Seattle tourist hunched over, leaning west toward Puget Sound, with Myrtle Edwards Park behind him. The Pet Shop Boys and New Order inspired this piece, purchased by a Seattle collector.

Confessions on a Dance Floor

Picture
4'x5'/121cm x 152cm

The 2005 Madonna CD shares the title with this abstract, in which one can see a boy represented by the purple figure kneeling at confession on a brown vestibule to the larger, winged white figure looking down toward him. The scene takes place on a dance floor, where we also see in the upper right a large-beaked toucan, in the center an enormous blue rabbit, and in the lower right, on top of the white section, a conical-headed man in a textured green velved jacket and red tie with black dots. Other faces and sets of eyes appear throughout the dance floor, including, in the upper left, a woman with gold earrings, blue eyes, and a large red mouth. She resembles Donald Duck's girlfriend.

2006

The Power of Goodbye
/Le Pouvoir de l'Adieu

Picture
10"x12"/25cm x 30cm

I painted this small piece to Madonna's song by the same name. Two vertical figures of different heights are separated by two horizontal red lines. The piece is punctuated by a signature red dot.

Taxi on Pike

Picture
12"x14"/30cm x 35cm

Taxi on Pine

Picture
12"x14"/30cm x 35cm

Garbage's Version 2.0 CD inspired these Seattle images. The bottom half of each is your viewpoint headed east up Pine and Pike streets from downtown on a wet evening; the top half represents what you would see in the rear-view mirror: downtown skyscrapers and remnants of sunshine on a clearing sky shortly after a heavy rain. This diptych can be classified as Expressionist.

Self-Portrait/Autoportrait

Picture
3'x4'/91cm x 121cm

This Ravel-inspired self-portrait is owned by a Seattle Web designer.

Death Valley
/La Valée des Morts

Picture
2'x3'/60cm x 91cm

Aaron Copland, Madonna, and the Pet Shop Boys served as inspiration for this colorful piece. A penny is painted onto the top center copper section and the piece is titled as is because of the hot colors that reminded me of Death Valley National Monument itself. The cooler colors, daisies, and distinct lines set apart the center image from the hotter background.

Death Valley
(black and white version)

Picture
2'x3'/60cm x 91cm

A Seattle client ordered the painting reproduced on canvas but in black and white, as shown here.

2005

Kansas/Le Kansas

Picture
14"x24"

This piece, painted on a spinning turntable, is another rendition of the Kill Bill: Vol.1 soundtrack and was purchased by a Texas collector born and raised in Kansas.

Lips/Les Lèvres

Picture
18''x24''

Britney Spears' In the Zone served as inspiration for this painting, owned by a collector in Paris.

Underwater/Sous l'Eau

Picture
3'x4'

This commissioned piece was inspired by a combination of Ravel and Bjork.

2004

Copper Mountain
/Montagne en Cuivre

Picture
24"x14"

A combination of Aaron Copland, Ravel, and the Pet Shop Boys served as inspiration for this painting of an imaginary copper mountainside.

Untitled/Sans Titre

Picture
14"x20"

Purchased as a gift for his daughter by a Seattle resident, this untitled piece is solely Ravel.

Face of Man in Harvest/Visage d'un Homme à la Récolte

Picture
14"x14"

The Police's Ghost in the Machine served as inspiration for this piece, acquired by an Ohio collector. The pink section contains the image of a face that resembles Michael Jackson, above the neck and right shoulder, with his signature (plastic) button nose.

2003

Blue Dream
/Rêve Bleu

Picture
3'x2'

This was my first painting and is based on a dream I had in 1998. The blue you see in the painting is the blue that was in the dream. It was when I put on Ravel while working on this piece that I discovered I could see images in music, which was purchased after being shown at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.

Rain/La Pluie

Picture
30''x30''

This painting I did to "Bolero" and some Madonna music, during a rainy winter in Seattle. It was purchased by a Portland collector.

24 Hours
/24 Heures

Picture
 24''x18''

I painted Madonna's Music and again, "Bolero." Unintended images that you might see include: a yellow cat, a fish, an elephant, a toucan, and a rhinoceros. This piece could be classified as Fauvist, along with 2010's 36 Hours.

Signals/Les Signaux

Picture
36"x22"

I listened to the Star Wars soundtrack to create this painting.

Catacombs/Les Catacombes

Picture
30''x30''

I listened to Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger" and Ravel's "Bolero" to create Catacombs, whose title comes from the apparition of a skull in the lower half just left of center. This painting is owned by a Seattle Web designer.

Passion/La Passion

Picture
24"x18"

Moby's "Porcelain" and "Natural Blues" were employed to create Passion.

July/Juillet

Picture
30''x30''

This is one of my favorite pieces. I painted the soundtrack to Kill Bill: Vol. 1. The first song is Nancy Sinatra's "Bang, Bang," which is a very slow moving song, inspiring me to let the paint flow on gravity. The yellow section can be the sun itself shimmering in the sky or on water, or even the Milky Way Galaxy. This painting was purchased by an art collector in Hawaii.

October 15/Le 15 Octobre

Picture

12"x12"

October 16/Le 16 Octobre

Picture
12"x12"

This diptych was acquired by a buyer who liked how I envisioned the combination of Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" and Ravel's "Bolero."

The Porthole/L'Hublot

Picture
24"x30"

This is more of Ravel's "Bolero" and some Madonna music. It could be either a magnifying glass or a ship's porthole looking out onto the water, which is cut up into sections of red, white, blue, and gold, punctuated with representations of triangular green sailboats.

Rain on Windowpane/La Pluie Sur Vitre

Picture
10''x20''

Dirty Vegas's "Days Go By" served as inspiration for this piece, owned by a collector in northern Washington state. The CD had the original and two remixes and I painted this on a dreary and wet Seattle weekend.

Sitting Child/Standing Woman-Enfant Assis/Femme Debout

Picture
12''x10''

Standing Woman/Sitting Child-Femme Debout/Enfant Assis

Picture
12''x10''

This is one of my favorites because when inverted it takes on an entirely new image. The one to the left is a ceiling view of a child sitting at a desk; the one to the right is the painting, where you can see a standing woman, and farther out to the upper left, the face of a bearded man facing right.

Cupid's Ten-Shooter
/Le Fusil d'Amour de Dix Coups de Cupidou

Picture
24"x14"

Termini Imerese, Italy/Termini Imerese, Italie

Picture

10''x12''

More pop music served as inspiration for this, specifically the Bangles. The title comes from the colors, which reminded me of a seaside gelato stand under palm trees I had seen in 2001 in Termini Imerese, a small town on Sicily's north coast.

Astor Street Willow
/Saule Pleureur sur Rue Astor

Picture
1'x1'

Ravel's "Bolero" served once again as inspiration. What formed is a willow tree, whose trunk is of varying earth tones. This piece found a home in Paris.

To Love You is a Sin

Picture
18''x18''

"Bye Bye Baby" from Madonna's Erotica CD inspired this square painting, now owned by a Seattle collector. I stenciled letters while making a play on words for Madonna's lyrics from the song stating, "So I'll just stop blowing in the wind."
